Google AI Overviews

In one sentence

Answers written by Google's AI at the top of some results, with links to the pages that support them.

Definition

AI Overviews are summaries generated by Google at the top of some results pages. They give the gist of a complex question and show links to the pages that support the answer. AI Mode serves questions that call for exploring, reasoning or comparing, as a conversation.

For Google, these features are part of Search: a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to appear as a link. Google states that no special structured data, file or markup is needed.

Value for a business owner

On questions where an AI Overview shows, the reader first sees an answer and a few sources. Being one of those sources matters as much as being the first link, and the pages cited are the ones that answer plainly, with verifiable facts.

Since late August 2026, Search Console has published generative AI reports: your pages' impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country and device. A setting also lets you include the site, the default choice, or exclude it.

At Stratedge Consulting

The free AI visibility audit checks in about thirty seconds that Googlebot can read your page and that no rule keeps it out of the index. The AI Visibility offer, at €3,000 excl. VAT, then rewrites the direct answers of ten key pages and measures your presence before and after.

Common mistakes

Blocking Google-Extended to get out of AI Overviews. That token concerns the Gemini apps and Vertex AI; it has no effect on Google Search or its AI Overviews.

Paying for AI-only tricks, such as an llms.txt file or a page for every wording of a question. Google states that its search does not use such files, and that a page per query variation breaches its scaled content abuse policy.
